Why did Esquire really hate Erin “New New”?

Esquire was an CERTIFIED hater!

If we were to look up the definition of “hater,” his picture would be the first to come up. He had no problem with spewing negativity on New New’s name, even if he had no real reason to do so. Throughout the movie, Esquire is the only person that is repelled from New New and is not too fond of her presence whenever she is around.

Never in my life have I ever seen a boy hate a girl so much like I have in this movie, and it needs to be discussed.

  1. The Waffle House Scene

When Rashad, Esquire, Teddy, and Brooklyn all meet at Waffle House, we were first introduced to New New when she entered with the twins Veda and Star.

As the group of friends discussed New New from across the restaurant, Esquire was the only person to say something negative about her.

He literally said to his friends, “She ghetto, man…”

  2. The Cascade Scene

Everyone in the skating crew knew that Esquire was the weakest skater…

Cascade was the popular skating rink in the movie (and in real life), and the skating crew consisted of the main characters Rashad, Teddy, Brooklyn, and the insufferable Esquire.

As New New grew closer to his friend Rashad, she felt the need to give Esquire some tips on how to skate since he definitely made the whole crew look a mess. She was funny for mocking his skating style, though.

Unfortunately, Esquire did not take her tips as something positive as he got angry at her.

He literally said to her, “Man, I don’t like you!”

Was that necessary? I understand that he may have been embarrassed by the way he skated, but being mean to New New was uncalled for, especially when she hadn’t done anything to him.

  3. Erin’s True Lifestyle

New New being outed as a rich kid was one of the biggest reveals of the entire movie, and Esquire had everything to do with it.

John Garnett, Erin’s dad, was Esquire’s dream person to write his letter of recommendation. In order to receive it, Esquire had to meet at John’s mansion. John wanted him to meet his daughter…and that is when the big reveal happened as Erin “New New” is John’s daughter and is a child of money, and we are talking MILLIONS of dollars in her family’s name!

So it raises the question of how could someone with her lifestyle want to pretend to be “ghetto?”

This situation solidified Esquire’s hatred for Erin.

Once they were alone in the dining room, he literally told her, “You ain’t shit!”

This became a secret that he kept as leverage over Erin, and there was neverending pressure for her to come clean to Rashad.

  4. New New and the Twins

The twins Veda and Star were New New’s friends and her key to the “ghetto” side of Atlanta.

However, Star and Veda were known to steal, in which everyone knew about that. But because Erin chose to be friends with them, could this be a reason why Esquire did not like her? This is a weak theory because Esquire was seen hugging one of the twins in the movie.

Even though Esquire’s feelings were valid as Erin was actually a weirdo for lying, it still does not explain his hatred for her before this incident. We still don’t know the exact reason as to why he disliked her so much.

Was it New New’s attitude that annoyed him?

Was it her choice in friends?

We still don’t know, but we can all agree that Esquire was a CERTIFIED HATER!!!!!!
